Local Member of Parliament Antony Higginbotham visited Padiham Primary School this week as part of his School Tour, giving pupils the opportunity to quiz him on his role as an MP.
Running since 2021, it was started to get more children engaged in politics by allowing pupils to discuss ideas whilst emphasising the importance of dialogue and respect for one another.
Speaking in full assembly Antony explained the role of an MP and how it fits into the wider organisation of Government before then moving on to a Q&A with Year 5 and 6 Pupils.
Speaking about the event Mr. Higginbotham said:
Nothing like this happened when I was at school. But I’ve found these visits to be a brilliant way to get children talking about and interested in how our democratic process works. Because it’s important.
You never know what you’re going to be asked either but we covered a lot of topics, including what the children thought was the right voting age. A lovely experience which I hope the students enjoyed as much as I did. They certainly got into the flow of things discussing and debating different ideas and asking questions.
I’d like thank all the staff there too, particularly Ms Spencer for reaching out after seeing the school tour take place elsewhere.
