Burnley and Padiham’s MP has welcomed the next cost of living payment. Worth £300 it will be sent out automatically to 16,200 vulnerable and low-income households across the borough between 31 October and 19 November 2023.
The payment will provide assistance to families battling cost of living pressures as the Government provides further financial support whilst it focuses on reducing inflation.
This is the second of three payments totalling up to £900 for those eligible and on means-tested benefits, such as Universal Credit, Pension Credit, or tax credits. Details about the third cost of living payment will be announced in due course.
Combined these payments build on the Cost of Living Payments made last year worth up to £1,200, and form part of the Government’s record financial support for the most vulnerable, worth an average of £3,300 per household.
As part of the package eligible pensioner households will also receive a further £300 payment later this year as an addition to the Winter Fuel Payment.
Commenting on the support in place Antony Higginbotham MP said:
Households have faced rising living costs in the wake of Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine and is why I’m continuing to push the Government to protect the most vulnerable people across Burnley & Padiham - as well as ensuring all households see inflation driven down to help with bills.
I’m pleased to see that 16,200 families locally are eligible for a further means-tested cost of living payment worth £300 from today, and £900 in total for 2023-4.
These payments will give families much needed support, protecting vulnerable people who are most exposed to rising prices. And it comes on top of that wider work Government is undertaking to halve inflation and ensure all households locally are supported.
Commenting, Mel Stride, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, said:
The best way we can boost bank balances is by bearing down on inflation, but as we get there, we are ensuring the most vulnerable households are cushioned from high prices with a further Cost of Living payment.
Alongside this, thousands of Work Coaches across the country are helping people find work, increase their hours and boost their skills. I encourage anyone who wants to progress their career and strengthen their finances to visit their local Jobcentre to find out what help is available.
