Local MP Antony Higginbotham welcomed forty residents of Burnley and Padiham down to Parliament this week in his first Parliamentary coach trip.
Set up as a way to enable more people to see the Palace of Westminster, Antony ran a coach trip on a first come first served basis with a small fee to cover the transport.
Setting off at 7am the visit included a stop at Hyde Park, followed by a full tour of Parliament including Westminster Hall, Central Lobby, and the House of Commons chamber.
Asked why he had the idea to start these coach trips Antony said:
I think it’s important to be able to give people the opportunity to visit the centre of our democracy. Visiting Parliament is a unique experience, and even now I’m still struck by the magnificence and history of the place. That’s why the team and I come up with the idea to put a coach on and run a full day trip for those who want to visit.
Alongside the tour Antony was able to hold a question and answer session with all those present in one of the famous committee rooms.
Commenting on the first of what is hoped to be many coach trips Antony said:
It was absolutely brilliant to welcome so many residents down to Parliament on my very first Parliamentary coach trip!
Everyone in attendance seemed to really enjoy themselves. And given how well it’s gone I’ll definitely be looking to run another one in the new year. Because as I’ve said many times speaking with residents in Burnley and Padiham is one of the best parts of the job and to have so many people visit Parliament was excellent.
I also want to say a massive thank you to all those who came! They really were a great bunch of people.
