Anyone who has walked past my office this week will have seen the Armed Forces Day flag proudly flying, because this week is the annual Armed Forces Week celebrations. It is when we recognise the enormous contribution given by those who have and continue to serve every branch of the forces. Whether that’s regulars, reservists, veterans, cadets, or the families.
With the recent war in Ukraine, and the heightened aggression of Russia it’s more apparent than ever before how lucky we are to have a professional force that is ready and willing to stand up and defend our islands and allies whatever the cost.
Our borough has a proud military community, both serving and veteran. From the last remaining WW2 veterans that I have had the pleasure of speaking with, to those who saw action in Korea, the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan or the Falklands War (which we marked 40 years since the end only last week). They’re a credit to Burnley and Padiham.
On Monday I was also privileged to attend the official Armed Forces Day flag raising ceremony in Parliament. Led by the Speaker of the House of Commons this focused significantly on this year’s theme of family and children. It was moving to hear some of the poems written by children whose parents serve; listening to their thoughts, feelings and sadness when a deployment is coming up. Often, we focus on those who are deployed and who serve, but it would not be possible without the support network around them. That includes their regiment or unit but also friends and family.
To everyone across our borough who is involved in the armed forces in some way - Thank you.
This week has also been a time to reflect on the demoralising impact that bullying causes. The “Don’t Face It Alone” campaign day which took place on Wednesday was about highlighting this and showing young people in particular that they will be listened to and help is never far away. No one should suffer in silence and if anyone reading this needs help, please ask.
Come the weekend Padiham on Parade will be back too after a hiatus due to Covid and it’s set to be bigger and better than ever before. With a 1940’s theme there’s a spectacular series of events taking place; from a parade, demonstrations and re-enactments, a fun fair, military vehicle display and a Hurricane flyby on the Sunday. A great way to celebrate and I hope to see lots of people down there.
