Yesterday the Chinese Government enacted draconian national security legislation which rides roughshod over the rights and freedoms guaranteed to Hong Kong when we handed it over in 1997. It will result in those who call for freedom and democracy being under threat of extradition to mainland China for punishment and 'correction'. That is why the whole House of Commons united today welcoming the Government's decisive action, but I pushed the Foreign Secretary further and asked for assurances that our dealings with China will no longer be business as usual.
