This week has been as busy as ever as I continue to stand up for Burnley’s interests in Parliament.
On Monday I met with the Secretary of State for Education Gavin Williamson where I welcomed the extra funding for schools in Burnley and Padiham. We discussed how, in addition to extra resources, there needs to be a focus on leadership and tougher discipline to improve standards and educational attainment in schools throughout the area.
The meeting also fit nicely with the following few days where there has been a major focus on apprenticeships as part of National Apprenticeship Week. I was pleased to attend the North West Business Leadership Team reception where they launched a report on the subject, focusing on both school leavers and those who want to re-train in later life, ensuring we have the workforce needed for tomorrow. Apprenticeship fairs have been in place throughout most of the week so I have used these opportunities to promote what Burnley has to offer.
Additionally, I met with Make UK - the manufacturers organisation – to hear about the positive contributions made by the industry and how they play a vital role in our local economy, employing 7000 people in total. We discussed how we can encourage these businesses to take up the opportunity to grow their exports and create more jobs within the town.
It was also great to speak with Google who are committed to rolling out training opportunities for young people, providing digital skills which will help create a safer online environment and also equip the next generation with the know how to succeed in a modern, digital economy. I’m looking forward to working with them to bring those workshops to Burnley.
I’m back in Burnley this weekend where I’m looking forward to meeting with the Police to discuss local priorities and will also be in attendance at the Burnley Wood River of Light Festival.
