Lowerhouse Junior School has welcomed Burnley and Padiham’s MP Antony Higginbotham as part of an ongoing school tour the MP is running to provide schoolchildren interactive learning experiences that stress the importance of democratic engagement.
The School Tour which has been running throughout the year was started to get more children engaged in politics by allowing pupils to discuss ideas whilst emphasising the importance of dialogue and respect for one another.
Commenting on his visit to Lowerhouse Junior School Antony said:
These visits are proving a great way to get children within our borough interested in how our democratic process works. We didn’t have anything like this available when I was in school, but I think it’s important as it drives aspiration and gives every child the confidence to know that they can be anything they want to be.
I’m always impressed by the level of interest shown - and Lowerhouse Juniors was no different. After speaking with two Year 5 classes about the workings of Parliament I held a Q&A with the school council who asked me a variety of questions. It’s great as the students become really engaged and you can see their confidence start to increase.
I’d just like thank all the staff, particularly Mrs Isherwood and Mrs Mills for being so welcoming. And look forward to my next visit.
