In a significant move to enhance access to dental care across the country, the Government has announced the implementation of a new Dental Recovery Plan.
Backed by £200 million of extra funding, it will deliver an additional 2.5 million appointments across England over the next year. It will also incentivise dentists to take on new patients with a one-off payment of £20,000 if they work in underserved areas.
Commenting, Antony Higginbotham MP, who raised the issue of accessing a dentist with the Dental Minister Andrea Leadsom earlier this year said:
Making sure that residents can access a dental appointment as and when needed is a big priority for me. And it’s something I’ve actively raised in Parliament.
Because from all the conversations I’ve had with residents over the past few months there seems to be a varied response when it comes to accessing dental care. Whilst some people tell me of no issues whatsoever, others speak of difficulties finding a dentist and that can’t be right.
This new plan is very much welcomed. We know that improving access to NHS dentistry will take time but I’m completely committed to playing my part in improving the system for all in Burnley and Padiham.
This new initiative aims to support dentists in taking on new NHS patients, particularly focusing on those who have faced challenges in accessing care over the past two years.
Alongside ‘golden hello' cash incentives to attract dentists to underserved areas, creating opportunities for around 1 million new patients to access NHS dental treatment, patients will be able to easily identify participating practices in their area through the NHS website.
The 'Smile for Life' initiative will also be focusing on preventive measures for reception age children, promoting good oral hygiene practices in early years settings, schools, and Family Hubs.
In addition dental undergraduate training places are being increased by 40% to over 1,100 by 2031/32 with a consultation launching shortly to explore ways to encourage dentist graduates to work in NHS dental care.
The Dental Recovery Plan represents a significant commitment by the government to address the challenges in the dental care system and ensure that everyone has access to quality oral health services. For further information and updates, please visit the official NHS website.
