Last week we watched in horror as Israel – a friend and ally – came under attack from Hamas, a barbarous terrorist group. On that day, 7th October 2023, more than 1,400 innocent Israelis were murdered in the single deadliest days for Jews since the Holocaust. Men, women, babies, and the elderly.
In addition, more than 3,500 people were wounded, and almost 200 taken hostage with the sole purpose of being used as human shields.
This mindless terror, deliberately targeting civilians, is utterly appalling. And is why we must unequivocally condemn Hamas. And it is why we are right as a country to stand with Israel in its right to defend itself against such horror.
Thankfully, this is an issue generating cross party support. Indeed, as Labour Leader Sir Keir Starmer said in the House just this week, “as in any time of grave crisis, it is crucial that this House speaks with one voice. In condemnation of terror. In support for Israel in its time of agony and for the dignity of all human life.”
It is rare for me to quote the Labour Party on any issue, but on this unanimity is important.
There is also, rightly, deep concern for the unfolding tragedy taking place in Gaza. It is a concern I share.
As Israel seeks to defend itself, removing the threat of further terrorist atrocities as it must, it is vital that it does so in the right way. Respecting international law, protecting innocent civilians, and ensuring aid can get to those who need it most. Because as democracies our moral strength comes from the respect we have for the Rule of Law.
This is clearly difficult to do when Hamas uses the civilian population to shield behind. But it remains imperative, nonetheless. And we should remember that Hamas are not the Palestinian people. And the Palestinian people are not Hamas.
On Tuesday I met the UK Foreign Secretary, and on Wednesday the Israeli Ambassador to the UK. In both meetings I stressed these points and sought assurances on the steps being taken.
I was pleased to see that on Thursday it was announced that the Rafah Crossing, which links Gaza with Egypt, is to reopen for a large aid convoy. And the UK has also announced a major aid package for the Palestinian people, increasing our current levels of aid there by a third.
The weeks ahead will be difficult for Israel and for the Palestinian people. We must keep the prospect of peace and stability alive.
